ABC Challenge : week 8

by Lara

Congratulations to Stella who won my contest for participating in this week’s challenge!!!  I’ll be in touch! Now, everybody keep up the good work! Be creative, set new stages, see what you can come up with. We’re more than halfway through the challenge!! 🙂

We’re having a weekday meetup, (which I know won’t work for everyone but we’ll have another one at the end on a weekend, I promise) on June 16 at Parliament Hill at 9:30am. If you want to join us we’d love to see you! There’s a bit more discussion going on about it on flickr.

Photography tip

This is anything but rocket science, but I think sometimes we need a reminder.

Print your photos!

I realized at one point that I hadn’t printed any new photos in something like 15 months! You’re taking lovely photos, print them, put them on your walls, give them to the people you love!

This last week I made a point to print some of my latest favourites and put them up on the wall. I’m thrilled every time I look at them. SO much better than just having them in my computer.

Which leads to another question. Where do you have your photos printed? I generally either order mine through Kodak Gallery (where I’ve stored my photos for something like 7 years) or at Costco (who is having a 10 cents a print sale until June 6).  I know some people use more professional places to print their photos. Do you find a big difference? Discuss!! 🙂

Also, I want to post about some great spots in Ottawa to take photos of (your) kids.  Email me (lara.wellman(at)gmail(dot)com) if you have a great spot (and maybe include a photo) and I’ll post them over the next couple of weeks as part of my photography tips.

  1. I am so bad at this! I haven’t printed off any pictures from 2009 yet. 2009! I keep telling myself I am going to do it, but well, you know.
    Thanks for the reminder.

i print. lots. and keep my albums up to date, as well. and have been known to organize the albums of others. i thimk it is a bit of a sickness. my house my be in a state of chaos regularly…but my photos? never;)

i have printed through shoppers and costco online…not loving the recent results, although you can not beat the price. walmart massacres photos. i have never had a satisfactory set ever. very frustrating.

right now, i do my regular prints and enlargements through snapfish – using the handy little button above my flickr photos. they print the postprocessed prints extraordinarily well. the price is fair, delivery FAST – like 3 days and quality terrific.

every once in awhile i splurge and order prints through QOOP. they print in a 12×12 size which looks fabulous in the ikea fjallsta frames. it is more expensive ( the shipping kills you ) but the results are amazing.

i love seeing photos hung and think it is a shame that they are hidden in computers…at least splurge on a digital frame:))

I use Artscow – they have a 1200 free print bonus (stretched out over 1 year) which forces me to print 100 or so prints a month (mix of 4×6 and 5×7) or the credits expire. They come from Hong Kong and I do pay shipping, but it still works out to about 6cents a print. They often do offers for other sizes super cheap – I recently got 5 8x10s shipped for 50cents a print!

The quality has been great for me, but I have seen some complaints from others.

They are at artscow.com. If you want me to refer you, I get bonus prints too :)…

As an avid photographer, I take a lot of shots of both my little guy Jacob and my friends kids. Up until a month ago, I worked as Assistant Manager at a Blacks here in Ottawa and I think the printing quality they have is great and if you look online they sometimes have great deals like 5 8×10 for $5.00. I am also a consultant for Creative Memories. We’ve got something for everyone who likes to take photos and celebrate life’s moments! Traditional scrapbook album, PicFolio slip-in style album, Digital StoryBooks. We aren’t just about scrapbooking anymore!
I also became Digitally Endorsed in March, 2010. I am now CERTIFIED to help my customers organize their digital images and celebrate their memories our programs.

    • I’m curious how that works? Do you help them delete the blurry ones? I need help with that 😉 Sounds interesting! I’ll have a look at your site.

My website is for all of the creative memories stuff I have. As for organizing photos, I come to you or you come to my house with your lap top and or cds as well as your prints and I help you catergorize your photos. With my little guy, I print a lot of photos but I also create a lot of digital albums that incorporate his day to day life. I have created books that teach him ABC using his photos and I create bedtime stories of special events that we have experienced… trip to the zoo. I help my customers create this books with their photos and memories

  5. I am embarassed to say I have an outlook task that dings once a month to print my photos. If I didn’t, they’d never be printed. I’ve used Kodak for the last 3 years and love it. Especially the whole ‘comes in my mailbox’ and requires no pick-up part 🙂

    • Did you know you can pick them up at Future Shop for free? I mean, I know that takes away the “arrives in your mailbox” part, but I’m always trying to save on shipping so I was thrilled when they started offering that. I also like their photo books.

  6. Vicky

I am so torn about what to do with my printed photos. Maybe you have some suggestions. I started an album for my son, but I haven’t touched it since he was about 10 months old. I also have a scrapbook for him. I also want to do a photobook. And I want to print my blog. Do I really need all of them? I haven’t even started anything for my daughter. She’ll be 1 next week. By the time I get to her scrapbook she’ll be in University.

What do you do to capture all these memories?

And thanks for the reminder Lara, I need to print some photos from Kodak Gallery before they go and delete my account.
